Lulwa Alsalem
Kuwait, 2002
Lulwa Alsalem, born in 2002, is a Kuwaiti multimedia audio-visual designer currently pursuing her BFA in Art, Media & Technology at The New School: Parsons Paris. Her work delves into social design, using conceptual art to foster social awareness and challenge perceptions of her Arab identity.
Raised by two creatives, Dalal Alnafisi (Interior Architect/Designer/ Director of Manifesto 13) and Riad Alqabandi ( Architect & Music Composer ), Lulwa was introduced to the Design world from a young age, allowing her to develop skills within different medias through the catalyst that was her mothers Art school, formed in 2013.
Manifesto 13 is an "un-school" founded by Dalal to promote social awareness and change through art, addressing the lack of emphasis on arts in Kuwait's education system.
Through Manifestos’ silent auctions, Lulwa was able to sell her art that would proceed to fund several social causes, such as underfunded schools in syrian refugee camps & struggling families facing the sudan war.
Lulwa aims to challenge her culture's perception of art as lacking societal value. Influenced by the role models in her life, she is committed to ensuring that her work exemplifies the creation of art with intent and purpose.
